While Canada's Aboriginal ancestry is a source of great pride, many Aboriginal communities across the country have faced tremendous challenges related to preservation and celebration of racial and cultural identity. Youth are particularly vulnerable to the cultural identity questions that may arise during the teen years as they strive to make the transition from child to adult.
Bamboo Shield is designed to support youth and their families through this critical life phase. The program aims to reconnect Aboriginal youth with their cultural roots and community support system. Both peer-to-peer and adult mentoring are incorporated to help teens understand the importance of positive role modeling, conflict resolution, self-management and decision-making.
If you are an adult with Aboriginal ties - whether personal or professional - and you would like to become a Bamboo Shield mentor, please contact CRC.
