Teacher Professional Development: Cultural Crossroads PDF Print E-mail

Alberta teachers recognize that the cultural and racial background of all students needs to be respected and that students need to be protected from discrimination. Yet translating these core values into practical classroom strategies and tools can be challenging.

The Centre for Race and Culture's (CRC) extensive experience developing cultural competency and in the management and elimination of racism means we can help teachers build the capacity they need to bring culturally sensitive learning and communicating into the classroom. We can help teachers become aware of the persistence of racism and learn how eliminating racism can grow from a vision to a real possibility.

Cultural Crossroads is a bilingual initiative that offers customized workshops, joint planning, coaching, and follow-up activities for teaching and administrative staff.  Learning modules and methods are customized to meet the needs of your particular team based on an assessment of staff knowledge, competencies, priorities and desired outcomes.

Cultural Crossroads professional development is customized to meet the needs, priorities and desired outcomes of your particular organization or team.  Delivery generally involves workshops, coaching, planning and/or follow-up to address these core cultural themes:

  • Cultural awareness of self and others
  • Communication among and within cultures
  • Culture, race and faith-specific knowledge (e.g., Sudanese, Aboriginal, Muslim, Sikh, etc.)
  • Improving school relationships and student performance
  • Preparing teachers to work within an increasingly diverse student group
  • Strengthening capacity to manage cultural misunderstandings and conflict
  • Recognizing discriminatory attitudes and behaviours at school
  • Increasing capacity to perceive and remove discrimination from school functioning
  • Appreciating the strengths and gifts that culture offers

Cultural Crossroads is partially funded by Alberta Ministry of Gaming, Alberta Lottery Fund.
