Classroom Resources PDF Print E-mail

Under its Cultural Crossroads initiative, in 2005 the Centre for Race and Culture (CRC) conducted a compilation and critical review of available resources to identify material appropriate for the Culture and Community strand of the new K-3 Social Studies curriculum. Resources were reviewed by two English and two French reviewers, ensuring applicability across the two language contexts.

The Centre for Race and Culture's (CRC) bilingual catalogue consists of an annotated bibliography of resources, all distributed by the Teachers' Book Depository (18004 - 116 Ave. Edmonton, 780-453-7092). Please search this site by author or title and follow site instructions for ordering.

As well, CRC has released their entire set of Cultural Crossroads Catalogues: bilingual, culturally appropriate, and anti-racism resources for all grade levels of school and one for teacher resources.

In addition to approved curriculum resources, CRC has also compiled an exhaustive directory of recommended reading and videos.   These materials can help teachers identify stories, novels and non-fiction resources that are age appropriate and targeted to the priorities, challenges and strengths of your particular classroom or school.

Race and Respect is CRC's own 'Best Pick' bilingual compilation of powerful interactive activities designed to teach students about human rights, racism, multiculturalism, and diversity. The activities are designed to meet the learning objectives of Alberta's Social Studies and CALM curricula and can be easily adapted to curriculum in other subject areas.

Support Resources for the Alberta Social Studies curriculum, CRC's compilation of more than 100 print and audiovisual materials offers professional educators a wealth of information related to cultural diversity and inclusion.  Particularly helpful is the K-3 catalogue of support resources for the new Social Studies curriculum.  These are updated yearly and available through the Teachers' Book Depository.
