Alberta Hate/Bias Crime Report & Hate Crimes: What you should know and what you can do! (pdfs) - The Hate-Bias Motivated Crime and Incidents Provincial Strategy Committee (now Alberta Hate Crime Committee) was formed in 2002 to develop a province-wide framework that encourages and supports a collaborative, integrated approach to preventing, enforcing and responding to hate and bias motivated activities in Alberta.
Research and consultation provide an opportunity to understand more about the social context and root causes of racism while also generating insights into potential opportunities and solutions. The Center for Race and Culture (CRC) dedicates a proportion of its human resources and grant funding toward conducting and disseminating research.
Key research and consultation initiatives and projects include the following:
- Challenges Faced by Visible Minority Teachers in Six Alberta Districts (2007)
Currently only available in power point format, this research provides direct insight into the challenges faced by 12 visible minority and Metis teachers in Alberta. Direct quotes by participants make this a very powerful statement with significant repercussions for Alberta school districts.
- Equity in Edmonton Schools (2004)
This qualitative/quantitative study examines racial equity within the Edmonton Public, Catholic and Francophone school systems. Findings include a widespread variation in the degree and consequences of discrimination, individual and systemic racism, and culturally inclusive learning environments.
